South Africa Could See A Move To Lockdown Level 2

Is the country moving to Lockdown Level 2? Perhaps, as this is one of the measures being discussed by the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) as we tackle the third wave. This move has been recommended by the Covid-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee.

We might also see the curfew being extended and social gathering restrictions being tightened.

The Convener of the Progressive Health Forum, Dr Aslam Dasoo said:

Our major initiative right now must be to accelerate the vaccination. However, it will not have an appreciable impact on both the scale and the duration of the third wave. What we might get is protecting some older folk so hospitals may feel less of an impact.

He then recommends that Government should prohibit all non-essential and social gatherings to less than 20 people.

The Chancellor of the University of the Free State, Prof Bonang Mohale has said that the running rate of vaccines needs to see an increase before restrictions are tightened:

All of us need to re-double our efforts ... We are already in the throws of the third wave.

Government aims to find a balance between saving lives and saving livelihoods and the restrictions will therefore need to be in line with this as we've already seen a devastating number of job losses due to the National Lockdown.

South Africa has now had over 420 days of lockdown.
